Space_Play was established by two Birmingham-based architectural and urban designers to research, challenge, and develop ideas, concepts, and products across several disciplines. Our passion for both designing and making meant establishing a base with dedicated studio space, equipment and the right partners was imperative to Space_Play as a collective. We currently offer services such as in-house laser-cutting, architectural model-making and craft via artwork and commissions in addition to developing our own projects, artwork and research.
We are a very small team with extensive experience in architecture and urban design both in the UK and abroad, but our passion lies in collaborating with others, to challenge, define, and develop our understanding of every project. Our ad-hoc approach gives us flexibility in bringing additional project partners and consultants on board to give each project the rigour and quality it deserves at all stages.
You can read more about what we get up to and general musings at our blog, Play_Space.
Our current focus "BRUTAL BRUM" has seen several Birmingham brutalist buildings come to life in wooden laser-cut artworks and concrete sculptures which are available in our online shop. It is both a response to the recent resurgence of interest in Brutalism - fuelled by events such as the demolition of Birmingham Central Library and 103 Colmore Row (NatWest Tower) - as well as, for us, a personal goal in creating beautiful, affordable artwork to celebrate our city and to question the decisions made about our built environment and the role we play as citizens. In many cases our most prized buildings have come under threat and the social value of these disregarded.
